Platte River

The legendary South Platte River is known for its easy access and world-class trout fishing. It is possibly the finest fishery in Colorado, with flourishing brown and rainbow trout populations. For most of its length, access to the Platte River from the highway is easy, with numerous campgrounds and pullouts. The North Fork of the South Platte is home to large cutthroat and rainbow trout, but by far the most productive stretch of the South Platte is below Cheesman Reservoir, and though the access is a little tougher in this area, it offers dry fly fishermen abundant trout and beautiful scenery. Like many rivers in the area, the South Platte also holds populations of smallmouth bass and brook trout. Nymph fishing is usually good year-round here, with exceptional dry fly fishing in the summer. The North Fork of the South Platte also hosts large insect hatches throughout the summer which mean excellent opportunities to fight hungry trout.
